You'll excuse me for foaming at the mouth, I get this way when I'm supremely outraged.
You see, here in California, we have a ballot measure that is up for a vote on November 4th which proposes an amendment to the California Constitution that will have the following text: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
The latest polls show a solid likelihood of it passing. I want to rip my eye teeth out.
This ballot measure is a truckload of crazy. Is the gay marriage issue anything other than religious fundamentalism? Is there any rational reason for defining marriage? And if we're going to define marriage, why don't we take the next step and write an amendment that recognizes only marriages that mention Jesus Christ. How about we only grant governmental approval to Christian men and women who earn more than $75,000 a year.
I used to be proud to live in California - we're a Blue state, we are diverse, we have unsurpassed natural beauty, etc. But the fact that we're even considering defining marriage in any way is immoral.
Look, I understand if you have trouble with homosexuals. I'm Jewish and have been around plenty of people who didn't like me for that, so I've gotten used to that kind of thinking. It's one thing to be nutty enough to not like someone because of who they are. But there's a huge jump in crazy when you make an effort to legislate against it. Jews weren't the only ones killed at Auschwitz. And remember, eventually they'll come for you too. Eventually they want us all in the camps.
If you live in California, vote no on Prop 8. And if you live outside of California, give money to the folks who are fighting Prop 8. Stand up now, because eventually they'll come for you.
