The Kinks are a sort of forgotten band. Not that they didn't achieve success and have a large following, but very few mention them in the same breath as the Stones, the Beatles, etc., and, in many ways, they were as much responsible for forming future musical styles as those two bands were. For instance, a great argument can be made that "You Really Got Me" was the first true heavy metal song, or at least the prototype for the genre.
