I now have two functioning digital cameras. One is the Lumix DMC-FZ5, which I've had for about a year. It is a phenomenal point-and-shoot camera that I would recommend to anyone who just wants point-and-shoot. The other camera is a Nikon D40, which I received as a surprise Father's Day gift. It is a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera, with lots of point-and-shoot capabilities. However, it also handles like a traditional film SLR, with manual modes that allow me to adjust aperture, shutter speed, etc.
Below are two pictures of the same subject, taken with each camera, at the same tripod position (I just took one camera off and put the other on).
First, the shot taken by the Lumix:
Next, the same subject as taken by the Nikon:
Both were taken in full Auto mode (including Auto Focus). No, I don't remember what the Auto mode details were, so don't ask what the ISO speed was or what the Aperture setting was. I can tell you that both cameras were in Macro mode, but that's it. So let me know what you think. Should I keep the Nikon, or should I upgrade/exchange for an SLR with a better quality lens?

I like the Nikon picture better. It seems to show more lighting on the flower and it blurs the grass in the background to bring the eyes to the flower. The Lumix picture has everything in clear view but nothing is really popping out of the photo.
