Our old Rheem furnace (forced air) got a tune-up about a year or so ago. During the process, the technician showed me all of the deterioration to the blower, and how the metal flaking off not only was a bad sign, but that we were breathing it.
I talked to Leslie and she decided that we could wait, so we waited.
A week ago, for the fifth time, the pilot light went out. I called Rheem, who laughed when I read them the serial number, as our unit was manufactured in 1977. So, um, yeah, that's old. Leslie decided it was time for a new one.
I did a bunch of research, settling on Lennox. Specifically, I bought a G60 DFV(X), which has a two-speed variable motor. Very nice, very efficient, very quiet. It even came with a Honeywell thermostat, which was easy to program and promises a more sensitive thermostat.
We'll be comparing gas bills for the next few months, to see how things stack up, but the guess is that we should see cheaper bills compared to last year, and tighter control over when the heat comes on.
We shall see.

A couple of years ago, we found ourselves in need of a new a/c unit, and decided to replace the furnace as well.
We did a lot (A LOT!) of research, and finally settled on a nice pair of Tranes.
The company that installed the new units did an excellent job, and even found out that we had a major air leak in some of the duct work; unknown to us, we had been heating and cooling our attic for several years!
Our savings have not been as great as we had hoped, however we have been delighted with the performance of the units, so overall we are happy.
Good luck with your new furnace - may it keep you and your sweet family safely warm for many, many years to come! :)
