Alpha Girls

|

Dan Kindlon, Ph. D. was on Patt Morrison's show on KPCC this afternoon. He has written a new book called Alpha Girls, which suggests that this new generation of girls is unlike their predecessors, in that they are blind to any need for Feminism, as they naturally see themselves as equals. I'm psyched about this, because I'm a staunch Feminist who does his level best to raise his daughter to see herself as equal to all humans, as capable as all humans. I think it is my generation's job to eliminate the need for Feminism.

By the way, Noelle will be turning Eleven in the next few weeks, so be prepared for a few tears from me as I go through another maudlin period of "She's growing up too fast".

Well said.
I find it mildly amusing that I really wished that book was written by a woman. I'll check that out anyway!

Interesting idea. It certainly would make sense that as time progresses the notion of feminism would be ingrained into society rather than exist as a distinct concept. If it is true that the current generation of girls have already entered into this state then it definitely is a sign of positive progress.

Thanks for the comments.

Meg, I listened to this guy, and I felt that it was good that he was a he. It gave him a sense of distance that made his research appear more unbiased. Also, he's a father of twin girls, so he seemed legit.

James, I hear you and can only hope.

I'm going to pick up a copy of this book! I've noticed these "alpha girls" in my life in recent years, and while I am slightly jealous of the opportunites they have, it's more amazing to see the acheivements women have made. That women are now creating these opportunites for themselves is even better.

Mouse Of Danger,

My wife is the head coach of our daughter's soccer team, and as I help her, I watch the girls interact with the coaches and each other. They are fantastically unaware of recent history (such as the fact that women just got the right to vote in 1920). They see that they don't get to play on the boys' teams, but they equally see that the boys aren't allowed on the girls' teams. It's heartwarming. I may worry about the future of this planet, but in the end I know the girls will take care of it.

Thim,

Yeah, I hear you, and it is great.

As for the Glass Ceiling, Leslie runs into that at her job. There are so many men at her company that she outperforms, and yet those same men make more money and receive faster/better promotions.
