We went to the 39th California International Antiquarian Book Fair on Sunday. Lots of swooning over lots of great books. Many, many signed first editions, including Ulysses by James Joyce, The Marble Faun by William Faulkner, and a Scribner's that contained the first chapters of Tender Is The Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
While we were on the show floor, we had a celebrity encounter (I love Los Angeles). An actor who was in several of my favorite films was at one of the booths in a conversation with someone. I sidled over, eavesdropped for a moment, waiting for a lull. At lullpoint I said, Mr. Had Small Roles In Famous Movies. He turned and I said hello and then asked for an autograph. He said that he didn't have anything to sign. I proffered my book fair catalog, whereupon he demurred, saying he didn't feel comfortable signing autographs. That was interesting, but I let it go, satisfied that I had met him and had a chance to thank him for his work. As I will trust him that he didn't feel comfortable, I won't reveal his name, although as a hint, I will say that "this was not just a matter of chance".
