A while ago (a year?) I was told, by some very good friends, to see a Japanese film entitled The Mystery Of Rampo. If you'd like to get into Japanese cinema (or already are and have just never heard of this film), I recommend you Netflix it immediately. It is beautiful.
After I saw the film, I mentioned to my friends how taken I was with it. One of these friends sent me, as a gift, the original soundtrack recording. I cannot begin to communicate just how achingly beautiful this soundtrack is. It gets my vote for best "non-pop" orchestral soundtrack of all time. Thank you, my friend, for this incredible gift.

Hmm, I'm always up for a good foreign film. I'm already way behind on my movie watching but I'll add it to the list just the same. Besides, Japanese films help me brush up on my language skills :-)
I can also recommend this film. The cinematography is wonderful, seeming much more than merely realistic. In a way it was like the game Myst. My wife asked if we could sit in the dark when the movie ended, she felt so saturated by the imagery.
